WC eSports Rocket League Team Wins States
WC Secures Second State Title in the Game
Congratulations to our WC eSports Rocket League team for winning the club-level state championship in a game vs. Brookfield High School on Wednesday! It was a close match that WC won 4-1 on Wednesday. This is the second time our Rocket League team has won after securing our first state victory in 2021.
eSports started at WC in Spring 2021 as part of the eSports Ohio League. Students 13 years and older compete with other high schools in Ohio in the Fall and Spring (which runs from Jan to mid-March). The league offers three levels: club, reserve, and premier. WC primarily competes at the club level.
In January 2023, the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) announced its partnership with eSports Ohio to support and promote its annual tournament.
“We are excited to partner with OHSAA, which will allow us to continue to provide more opportunities to students,” said Jacob Gebers, Technology Director for Napoleon Area Schools and president of the Esports Ohio Board of Directors. “Esports Ohio and the OHSAA both share a common goal to enrich interscholastic opportunities for students. At our core, similar to OHSAA, Esports Ohio believes that participation in extracurriculars helps enhance a student’s school experience and teaches lifelong lessons of accountability, hard work and teamwork. With this partnership we will be able to open more doors for more students to compete free of charge in our growing league.”
Current game titles offered include Fortnite, Rocket League, Valorant, Smash Bros Ultimate, MarioKart, Chess, Overwatch 2, League of Legends, and Apex Legends. Team Coordinator Pam Cain said, “I let the student’s interest guide which [games] occur each season.” This season included Rocket League, Smash Bros., and MarioKart.
Congratulations to the team, and a big thank you to Ms. Cain for all she does to support our technology department and our eSports program – Go Warriors!
