TEACHER TUESDAY: LUCAS GANTZ

Mr. Lucas Gantz has taught fourth grade at WC since 2005.

How would you describe your teaching style? “My teaching style is centered around building relationships with my students. I believe my students have the most opportunity for growth if they are comfortable in the classroom with their teacher and their classmates. One of the great joys of being a teacher is getting to know my students and watching them grow throughout the year.”

What is the most challenging aspect of your work? “Classroom dynamics are similar to family dynamics. We get to spend a lot of time together. Sometimes we have to navigate stresses together. We all have to work together to build self-control, patience, and grace during their times where life and learning feel hard.”

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work? “At the elementary level, we are trying to build a foundation by which students can grow academically and spiritually as they continue to mature. Seeing students grow in both areas from the beginning of the year to the end is exciting. Watching the students smile (pre-masks) after they gain understanding, embrace the struggle of classwork, share prayer requests, talk about the Lord, and display an overall love for life is what makes being a teacher at WC worth it.”

How do you incorporate faith and learning in your classroom? “When I first began teaching, I was overwhelmed by the idea of incorporating faith into learning. Now I consider it a blessing to have that challenge. There are certain lessons and subjects in which I can plan to point students back to Truth, but I find that these opportunities often come naturally. I want to be flexible enough in my planning and instruction to allow God to weave His way through the classroom.”
