Katie Hedberg joined WC’s faculty this year as a first-grade teacher.

How would you describe your teaching style? “I would describe my teaching style as student-centered and energetic. My goal is for students to be excited about learning, engaged in activities, and ask questions out of curiosity to learn more! I like to teach using a variety of strategies to meet the diverse needs of my students. First graders are LOTS of fun and have TONS of energy, so I try to make the learning environment match their excitement!”

What is the most challenging aspect of your role? “The most challenging aspect of my work is meeting the unique needs of each child. Every student has their own strengths, talents, and abilities and I work hard to challenge, support, and encourage them. It is rewarding when a difficult concept “clicks” with a child who is struggling, or when a student is challenged and stretched to reach new goals. My hope is that every child feels loved, valued, seen, and encouraged in my classroom!”

What is the most rewarding aspect of your work? “The most rewarding aspect of my work is building relationships with my students and being part of the incredible growth they make throughout the year. First grade is a very important year for developing foundational math and reading skills. The progress each child makes over the school year is amazing! It is an honor to watch them grow as they become stronger readers and mathematicians. I enjoy partnering with families in helping each child flourish.”

How do you incorporate faith and learning? “I incorporate faith and learning by tying our curriculum back to Christ. First graders have curious minds and ask lots of questions. They want to know the ‘why’ behind what we are learning. Their hunger to learn more leads to great conversations about the Bible, creation, the gospel, and living like Christ. We frequently discuss how to love like Christ and the features of the wonderful world God has created.”
